INTERNATIONAL WOMEN´S DAY By: Luz Maria and Lina

“The woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacity ...
If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is infinitely superior to man ...
If nonviolence is the law of our being, the future is with women ...”

Mahatma Gandhi

The International Women´s Day began when a group of women workers in the factory decided to start a strike.

The strike was on March 8, 1857 in New York city. Years later, during one of the strikes, a lot of women died burned in a factory of Sitwoot Cotton. Many people think this tragedy, was responsibility of the factory’s owner. It Is possible this fire was an act of retalation to the women for the strike.

They were protesting the equal pay, less working hours of and the possibility to take care of their children.

In 1920, during the Second International Conference of women workers, more than one hundred women approved to declare the march 8 as the international women’s day.
At the present, the world celebrates this date, as recognition to the women worker for their contributions in different aspects, as political, social, economic, and cultural education, besides their effort to conserve and help the family.
Today, we talk about important women in the political aspect, for example:

1.      Michelle Obama, she is the president´s wife of The United States of America.  She is recognized to be the first woman afroamerican in that position and to avoid the obesity on the kids.
2.      Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is the president of Argentina.
3.      Park Geon- hye is the first female president  in South Korea.
4.      Dilma Roussseff has been the Brazilian president since 2011. She promoted programs denominated “my life, my house.”
5.      Angela Merkel is the Chancellor of Germany. She is considerate the most powerful woman in the world.

Other important women are:

1.      Aretha Franklin. She fought for the female liberation.
2.      Eva Peron Duarte, she promoted the women´s right to vote.
International Women's Day is an important day for all women worldwide. It is not a celebration, commemorating efforts to achieve equality and justice. In each country, the celebrations are organized on this date in order to recognize the rights of all human beings, men and women, regardless of nation, language, religion or culture.

Finally, we think that the role of women in the progress of civilization is higher than men’s, so we should develop our skills according to our nature without imitating them.
